New York Canals and Old Friends

17 September 2024 - Tuesday
Heading west in New York from Lake Oswego to Brockport.

0943  66,732  68°F  Leave Canastota, NY after a quiet night at South Shore Wines & Vineyards. We shared the parking area with one other rig. See yesterday's post for more about this pleasant Harvest Host.

1000  66,737   67°F  Verona Beach, NY

This Erie Canal Entrance Lighthouse has been continuously lit since 1917

Two other identical lighthouses guide boats across the lake. They are all 84 feet 6 inches tall. In the winter the lighthouses orient snowmobilers and ice fishers.

New York operates 524 miles of canals. The map and logo adorn the lighthouse access door.

Oneida Lake is shallow here, so a channel was dredged to the canal entrance.

In the summertime an amusement park operates nearby.

Looking east, the Erie canal bisects the town of Verona. Our western destination on this trip is Verona, not here, but in Wisconsin.

1115  66,764  69°F  Central Square, NY
Sweet Aroma Cafe

1220  66,792  73°F  Oswego, NY  273' elevation

Fort Ontario. Walked around the exterior of the Fort because it is closed on Tuesdays.

There are good views of the lighthouse and breakwater.  Made lunch enjoying this scene.  Leave 1317

1322  66,793  73°F  Lock 8 on the Oswego Canal

A view of the lock operator's control panel

Having two bikes on the back of the van lets us appreciate rail trails in towns like this one.

An old iron railroad bridge has been repurposed as a pedestrian and bicycle crossing. The canal lock and our little van can be seen to the north.

A boat ramp underneath the highway bridge provided just enough room to get this dory into the water. The freighter in the distance was being loaded with grain for export through Lake Ontario and the Saint Lawrence Seaway.

Signage with a map of NY's barge canals. The Oswego canal is the vertical one in the middle from the Erie Canal to Lake Ontario.

Leave 1409

1541  66,832  76°F  Sodus Point on Lake Ontario

Continuing west along the big lake, we stopped at Sodus Point where there are marinas and pretty lakeside parks.

1655  66,855  78°F  Captain Jack's Marina  487'

Genesee (beer) Building near Rochester Marinas  This used to be a coal terminal for railroads shipping to Canada.  The gate is the first sign of a coming development.

1715  66,866  78°F  Steve & Pam's home.

It was fun catching up with former coworker, friends, and RIT alumni.

After delicous burgers and salads by Steve and Pam, they took us on a walking tour of Brockport.

A new bridge over the Erie canal is under construction.

Beth and Pam walked across the Erie canal on an older lift bridge. Note the pedestrian stairs that allow people to cross when the bridge is up.

Downtown Brockport has nicely preserved buildings, including this one with an old Ivory Soap advertisement on the side.

No photos, but Abott's Custard was a yummy stop on the way out of town.

Goodnight from the Erie Canal in Brockport, NY

A big thank you to Pam and Steve for good food, good company, and an overnight spot in their beautiful yard.
