New York's Adirondack State Park is known for dark skies. We were fortunate to spend a few weeks camping out behind the family cabin near Au Sable Forks. Beth took advantage on several clear nights to experiment with her iPhone camera.
My favorite is this photo. She had the phone on a tripod and set the exposure for 30 seconds. During the exposure, I used my phone's flashlight to paint the boat with light for about five seconds.
There was even enough of an exposure to see the mountains across the lake.
This one shows what you can do without a tripod. Beth held the phone against the inside of the van's windshield and triggered the exposure from her watch.
No buzzing mosquitos, no gnats, no biting flies. In fifty-two years of visiting Fern Lake, I don't ever remember a summer evening without being bothered by bugs.
The Milky Way was so bright we even convinced mom to put aside her puzzle, turn off the lights, and look out to see the stars.
Hearing other creatures scurrying about, Beth illuminated five raccoons with her flashlight. They were not deterred from cleaning up the seeds dropped under the birdfeeder.
Although we don't have a fast wide-angle lens for the big camera, we did manage to capture this view. The tallest mountain is Whiteface. The glow at the summit is from the Atmospheric Sciences Research Station.
The sunsets aren't bad either!
Absolutely amazing photos 😄
