Fridge DC Mode Troubleshooting

11 October 2022

2018 Lexor TS Refrigerator Troubleshooting

Our Dometic RML 8330 UL fridge wasn't working on 12 Volt DC. This had happened a couple of years ago and it was a non-working circuit breaker. This time we traced it to the DC 12V 30A relay.

We followed the power to the relay with a multimeter.

Access the area from the outside lower vent.

The 30 amp circuit wasn’t closing, but there was 12 volts to the control leads when we switched the control dial to DC.

The relay is screwed to the back of the fridge.

It was easy to change as all the wires have slip-on spade terminals.

Found a replacement online at Panther RV Products and it arrived from across the country in 3 days. The part info is:

MC Enterprise 2930385006MC Aftermarket Dometic RV Refrigerator Power Relay, just in case anyone else runs into this problem. https://pantherrvproducts.com

The replacement relay isn't specific to Dometic Refrigerators, so search for this 12 volt / 30 amp relay if you experience a failure on your fridge.

  1. My relay in my 2021 Lexor is chattering so I took it out. It's a 4-pin whereas yours is a 5-pin. My fridge is also an RML 8330.

  2. O'Reilly Auto Parts has the relay for $10 if you need it. An RV repair guy pointed me to a standard auto parts store - he said it's a pretty standard automotive relay.

  3. Thanks Ed. It's nice to have local sources and O'Reilly is all over the US.

  4. It turned it wasn't my relay after all - it was a bad connection in the terminal block. When I pulled the wire, it was green on the end. I stripped a bit off, put it back in after discovering that the 12v fridge breaker had popped (the round top-facing set under the ottoman), it was working fine again. So now I have a spare relay to take with me on trips, just in case...

    1. Sorry, I've not been able to find a wiring diagram for the RML 8330.

  7. It is difficult to see, but we wired the new relay the same as the old relay.
    Black wire to 87
    Red wire to 30
    Small White wire to 85
Larger White wire with the double connector to 86
The spade in the middle of the relay (also 87) has no wire connected to it.

  8. Just FYI, I am an ASE automotive master tech. All of these 4 or 5 pin square relays work the same. Pins 30 and 87 are the load connections and are interchangeable. Although pin 30 is usually the power supply. Pins 85 and 86 are the control pins. Also interchangeable. The purpose of a relay is to use low amp voltage to control a high amp load. Usually a computer or toggle switch grounds pin 86 while pin 85 is connected to 12v source. A much larger wire connected to a 12v source goes to pin 30 and the load (whatever it is) goes to pin 87. If you have a fifth terminal, it is usually not used but will be hot from the pin 30 when relay is DE-energized. These are used all over a car. Great for doing accessories to rv’s. Enjoy!
