Fernie, Frank Slide, and Pincher Creek

7/19/2019

Stopped for a shower in the big campground before leaving lake Koocanusa behind. Enjoyed bagel sandwiches in the pretty town of Fernie, British Columnbia.

Several neat old buildings and nice shops are nestled into the mountains.

Cut stones make up the Fernie City Hall.

A train station is now shops and offices. The Visitors Center had a dump station and fill for 2 CAD.

An old mining train preserved a part of the town's industrial past.

Stopped at the Fernie brewery on the way out of town but there wasn’t a tour. I couldn't resist picking up some cans of their Moose Drool Ale.

Each small town along our route west had something to attract visitors. Here a sign directed us to "the world's biggest truck." Built by General Motors, it held the record until 1998 according to an article on Wikipedia.

Beth stood in front of the 65' long Terex 33-19 Titan. A 3300 HP engine moved the fully loaded 600 tons of truck and cargo when it was in operation.

Continuing east we passed into Alberta through Crowsnest Pass. There we found the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre. It explained, in detail, the 1903 slide that killed 90 people when a side of Turtle Mountain collapsed and wiped out most of the town. Over a hundred years later the scar still remains.

One of many interpretive signs.

We spent two hours looking at the exhibits, walking the grounds, and watching the movie presentation.

Surely didn’t want to spend the night at the foot of Turtle Mountain after that!

Just off the main highway, we crossed this arch bridge to visit Lundbreck Falls.

A great place for people with limited mobility to stop, no hiking was required to view these falls.

Spent the night at a beautiful farm in Pincher Creek.  This was our second Boondockers Welcome stay, and the first where the hosts were home. Bev and Garry are an interesting couple and we enjoyed talking about travel destinations with them over coffee. We appreciate their hospitality.
