Elk and Montana State Parks

Sunday 7/7/2019

After a quiet night at Wildwood Brewing, we were on the road at 0915. Half an hour later we stopped at a Tractor Supply to fill up our propane tank. They have been a consistently good place, with easy access to the propane fill.

Just before ten we pulled into Traveler's Rest State Park where we hiked in the footsteps of the Lewis and Clark expedition.

Traveler's rest is where Lewis and Clark camped over the winter of 1805-1806. It claims to be the only archeologically verified site of their expedition.

A short hike turned up this interesting mushroom growing from the stump of an old tree.

From Traveler's Rest we headed north to Missoula where we fueled up at Costco and dumped our tanks at Cenex.

We made lunch in the parking lot at the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation before heading inside.

Although there weren't any live elk, the displays, art, and information were top notch.  This is as close as we've come to seeing a Bighorn Sheep so far.

The antlers on these stags were huge. I surely wouldn't want to be in their way.

Trying for a remote campsite, we drove toward Rock Creek in the LoLo National Forest. After about two miles, the road narrowed and turned to dirt. It didn't look like there would be room for two cars to pass, so  we decided to turn around and look for somewhere else.

By 1600, we were at  Salmon Lake State Park in site #7. The charge was $24 including 30 amp electric service.

Two miles of trails lead us through pretty forest along the lakeside where we found a few wildflowers.

These bloomed from the bottom up.

The hike looped back to the campground where we cleaned up with showers. We used a few of our laundry quarters to pay $1 for 3 minutes of hot water.

Google did a good job of tracking us in some fairly remote areas.

  1. We couldn't see it from the campsite, but it was a short walk to the lake with that view.
