RIT

We were packed up and out early for a morning information session and walking tour of Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). There have been significant additions to the campus in the 35 years since my last visit! The computer engineering facilities are very modern, with chip-manufacturing facilities available for students. The labs have a glass wall so we could observe some of the work as it happened. The photo processing lab and big web printing press are gone, replaced by classrooms and a green screen for digital effects photography. A new innovation center matched students with professors and people from industry to help them get their ideas funded and turned into reality. Nice etched glass panels and conference areas with the latest in projection systems and internet collaboration were impressive. On the recreation and sports side, there is a huge new ice hockey arena, nice exercise facilities, and even a lazy river next to the indoor pool for relaxing on those cold winter days in upstate New York.

After a quick lunch in the van we were on the road again, heading west to Massachusetts. We stopped at an Erie Canal exhibit in a thruway rest area. An old lock that had been bypassed was high and dry so you could walk through. They are in the process of restoring the lock keeper’s residence and some old boat building shops, so it will be an interesting place to stop in the future. Arriving at the Boston Minuteman Campground, we were pleased to finally have a camping spot in the woods!

Only 2 visitors at the canal and both were both Pleasure-Ways!
